AVENGERS REVIEWS ASSEMBLE! /shot down, dragged out back, buried forever
Anywho, these are just the new Avengers blends. For Steve Rogers, Loki, and Thor, check out this post <3
Tony Stark- [lapsang souchong, ginger, tiger eye] I was torn for a long time as to what to do for Tony. He just doesn’t feel like a tea sort of guy, you know? If only I could distill my own liquor. Sigh. BUT if I can do Haymitch, Tony Stark shouldn’t be a problem. My first instinct was to actually make the greenest, most grassy tea I could think of, in honor of the gunk Tony has to drink in Iron Man 2. But then I realized that doesn’t feel like Tony. So I fiddled with a few options until I got this, and was really happy when I opened the bag for my first whiff of the bag. It smells…. like a workshop. Smokey and dusty and…crisp. It’s really hard to explain, and sort of bizarre. After steeping, the smell becomes much richer and smokier, which is interesting. I may have steeped it longer than I should have, because the taste is very strong and a bit bitter, but TBH that’s how I like my black teas, so it doesn’t put me off. This is actually pretty great as a straight forward tea. I actually wish I could taste more of the ginger, but the tiger eye does a great job of down playing the smokiness of the lapsang so it’s not too overwhelming. There’s almost a slightly floral aftertaste which I think might be the ginger. It’s really pretty neat. I don’t recommend adding milk (Tony doesn’t seem like the type that would add milk to his coffee OR tea) but a bit of sugar brings the ginger out a little more *_*
Clint Barton- [thai chai, assam melody, gunpowder] To be honest, Hawkeye is the Avenger I’m the least familiar with. I’m really just basing this on the movie, EMH, and a handful of random comics. So. I’m sorry if I’m not getting his personality quite right Q_Q BUT I wanted something playful but still kick ass. Which is uh…. probably why this blend turned out so similar to The Colonel. Sorry. Assassins just seem to strike a chord in me that says “Coconut and Lemongrass and Chai!” Clint though, doesn’t smell as rich as the Colonel, luckily. In the cup, the smell is definitely dominated by the Thai Chai, but tasting it is a bit surprising, since the Assam and Gunpowder actually do shine through and mellow out the Thai Chai. There is a bit of coconut on the aftertaste, but yum. This is a good one to have if The Colonel is a bit too rich for you *_* Like most Chais, I really like this one with lots of cream and sugar as well <3
Natasha Romanoff- [lapsang souchong, assam melody, currant] I did all this research into Russian Tea traditions for Natasha’s blend, learning about how it’s traditionally prepared, and where it comes from and settled on this nice, rich smokey blend based on my research, and then tumblr told me that a lot of Russians these days like Earl Grey! Oh well, Natasha is traditional or something! That’s my story! Anyway, yes, smokey Lapsang and strong Assam, and then a bit of Currant because I hear that adding jam is popular and honestly I really might need to try that…. hmm. Anyway, in the bag Natasha smells soooo rich and smokey, without the spiceyness of the Sherlock blend or the fruitiness of the Irene blend, which is a relief. She smells dangerous. It’s marvelous. The smoke scent is still strong, but not quite as powerful in the cup. The first impression is quite savory, and there’s already a review on Adagio that compares it to bacon, and I’m inclined to agree! It’s not unpleasant though, just interesting. I think I’ve about learned what ratio the Lapsang should be in so that it’s not punch you in the face smokey. The currant is lurking in the background, barely noticed, but after sitting here for a minute…. I can definitely taste it. It just takes a minute to catch up with the smokey flavor. So cool. But I might up it’s ratio just a bit more. And just for giggles, I’m going to add a small spoonful of jam to my tea. I’m not sure what flavor jams are actually appropriate, but I have Cherry right now, and that’s my favorite, so in it goes. Um. Hmm. It might just be my jam (ha) but it actually made it a bit bitter. No jam for me in the future, thanks. Here’s where I say something symbolic about Natasha’s tea not needing to be tarted up with stuff like that. Ha.
Bruce Banner: [earl grey green, green pekoe, chamomile] Okay, I need a nice break after 3 really strong, black teas. It’s sort of ironic that the bag with The Hulk on the cover is the mildest and most soothing of the blends. It should be low caffeine (as compared to the black tea blends) and have lots of soothing properties. Perfect for Banner. And I’ll have to get a picture of this later but dudes, the tea itself is adorable. It’s basically a bag of flowers. Yellow Chamomile and Blue Cornflowers from the earl grey green. And oh my god the smelllll. It’s like all my favorite smells. I want my room to smell like this. It would be the most relaxing smell in the world. I want to roll around in it. Can I add it to my laundry? Would that make my clothes smell like it? Lord. After steeping…. THE BEAST EMERGES. I can’t even make this up, but it seriously smells less floral and way more green now. It’s crazy. It’s a lovely pale yellow/green too. Taste-wise, there’s something really familiar about this that I can’t quite place. Maybe it’s like sleepy-time tea? It could just be the nostalgic taste of chamomile, which is basically the only tea my parents let me drink as a child. Whatever it is, it’s incredibly nice and soothing. I think the earl grey works wonderfully here, making it just a bit fruity, but not overly so. I don’t even want to add sugar, and I don’t ever add milk to green or herbal teas.
Son of Coul- [toasted mate, tiger eye, chestnut ] Back to the strong teas, and man, Coulson is strong. It’s one of the blends I’ve made with coffee drinkers particularly in mind and yeah. It’s a pretty good substitute. Anyway, the smell reminds me vaguely of mocha turtle brownies 8D Suuuper rich. I also recommend using the little fill-your-own-paper-tea-bag from Adagio or Teavanna with this blend, unless you have a strainer with a super fine mesh, otherwise you’re going to get flecks of Mate all up in your cup 8D; But yeah, I love how the toasted mate basically makes the cup smell like coffee, no matter what. And oh man, there’s some sort of magic happening with the combination of tigers eye and chestnut that actually makes this TASTE LIKE COFFEE without the bitterness. It almost tastes nutty. It’s just so rich and deep and sooo nice. This will definitely be a great wake-me-up tea to have in the morning. I added a lot of cream and sugar as well, just the same way I like my coffee, and it’s just perfect.
